What is CO2 laser skin surfacing?

CO2 skin resurfacing is an advanced laser treatment which precisely removes outer layers of damaged skin to reveal, healthier, brighter, smoother looking skin.

How does CO2 fractional laser skin resurfacing work?

Carbon dioxide laser beams remove and vaporise damaged skin. The laser beams penetrate the deep dermis creating microscopic areas of thermal damage which in turn stimulates new collegen production.

The damaged skin surface is then replaced by new epidermal cells which produce a more even skin tone and a much fresher, more youthful appearance.

The fraxel laser only treats a fraction of tissue at a time, leaving surrounding tissue untouched, this promotes a quicker, healthier healing process.

Is CO2 fractional laser painful?

At Eternal Youth our experienced practitioners will address all your concerns including worries about discomfort or pain.

In short the treatment is not painful and we will make the whole experience as comfortable as possible by applying a strong anaesthetic cream to your skin 20 minutes prior to treatment.

The treatment may irritate slightly but will not be painful.

Is there any downtime to CO2 fractional laser treatments?

The CO2 laser can be customised to reflect healing and downtime.

Your practitioner will determine the most appropriate energy settings from the results of your patch test and information you provide during consultation.

Essentially the deeper the treatment the more healing time there will be and the longer the downtime.

If we administer a more shallow treatment there will be less healing time and less down time, for this reason some patients tend to have two or three carefully spaced treatments.

Healing may take anything from 3-14 days depending on the depth of treatment, more shallow treatments will usually incur some redness and slight swelling, whereby a deeper treatment may produce some slight grazing, peeling and dryness.

When will I see results?

You can expect to see some immediate results, however the optimum result will not be apparent for 3-6 months as this is the period of time it takes for the production of new collagen.

The treatment is dependent on collagen stimulation and therefore is progressive.

This is a preferred treatment option for many men and women as it is much more natural and less of a dramatic transformation.

How long will the treatment take?

You will initially be numbed with a topical cream and this will be removed after 20 minutes.

Your treatment can take up to an hour, we therefore suggest 1.5 hours in total.

Are there any side effects to CO2 fractional laser treatments?

During the first several weeks post treatment there may be some pinkness.

The laser creates a superficial wound which may cause mild to moderate swelling and some peeling is quite common.

The skin will be sun sensitive for approximately 6 weeks and you will need to wear a high factor sun cream. Although as medical professionals we would recommend you use a high factor sun cream every day indefinitely to protect your skin from sun damage.

Some hyperpigmentation can occur especially in darker skin types but this can be treated independently in clinic and typically resolved within 3-6 months.
